04 ZHP- 18's or 19's???
 
Hey guys,
I've got an '04 ZHP that i'm looking to get a wheel package for. I've done a ton of research and i'm getting pretty close to decision time. my only real decision at this point is final diameter choice. Obviously I know what 18's look like on her and i've read in a lot of places that this car was made for 18's, but I must admit the 19's are looking really sharp.
I have chosen the VMR V710 Staggered setup to replicate the stock setup.
My question to everyone is this:
How much will the 19's affect my ride/performance? She's a daily driver here in Oklahoma and the highways are decent, but the side roads are not (Ashpalt on Kiamichi clay makes for some really wicked steering feedback sometimes! LOL)
I don't take her to the track but I do take the on/off ramps at 50-60 mph because she handles it SO well. :str8pimpi
If I choose the 19's will she loose some of her ability to handle cornering?
Will she rub the fender walls?
I really like the way the 19's fill up the wheel well and I suppose i'm going to have to get a set of spacers to move them out flush with the fenders (SO HOT).

This is the first set of wheels/tires that I have ever purchased and she is also my first Bimmer, so trying to be very cautious here.
Any and all feedback is welcome, especially those that are currently running 19's and their experience with them.

Oh- also Chosen the Hankook Ventus V12's for the rubber, I'm on my second set on the stocks and i like performance/value combination.

If you keep the over all diameter (tire and wheel combo) and weight close to stock then performance will not be affected with 18s or 19s. Sidewall size for 19s will be smaller so tire choice will become a little more crucial and you'll be holding your breath every time you see a pothole. The general rule of thumb is that for every pound of weight that you add in wheel/tire combo, it's equivalent to adding 2x that amount of weight anywhere else in the car. This only applies to straight line accelerating and braking. Weight also plays a large role in turning (gyroscopic effect) and in handling due to your suspension having to damp all of the road forces. When it comes to wheels and cars, lighter is always better for performance. So keeping that in mind it will come down to looks and IMO I personally like 19s. A lot of guys will say "blah blah blah performance" but honestly they are just trying to justify their purchase. I switch from 18s to 19s all the time and can tell you that besides having the piece of mind and comfort with 18s there is no real difference.

I have vmr v710's with hankook ventus v12 evo tires. 235 front 265 rear. If I go through a dip in the road that makes the rear compress pretty good I can hear a little rub. Other than that, the extra rubber definitely improves performance, just be verry cautious of potholes. I can say you will definitely not be disappointed with that combo

19s look really sharp on the E46, but ultimately it's up to you! You will notice a slight difference in terms of ride quality because the tire sidewalls will be pretty small. We recommend 19x8.5 ET35 front and 19x9.5 ET45 rear for a staggered setup. This should be okay with a 235/35/19 and 255/30/19 tire setup. Those Hankooks though don't come in that rear size, so you'll probably need to step up to a 265/30/19. The wider rears may rub here or there so I'd recommend possibly rolling your fenders if they're not already rolled.

The offset is very relevant to how wheels fit on your car. Different cars require different offsets, and the ones listed above are what we've found to be a good fit. Lower numbers (closer to zero or even negative) will mean that the wheel sticks out further. Higher numbers mean it will be tucked inside the fenders more.

wheel spacers are often used to make higher offset wheels fit better, without them, you can go deeper. the sizes recommended above are on my car, and the wheels are fairly deep, look good and aggressive, and feature tire sizes that are exact in width to the M3 CSL. (larger than a normal ///M). I am lowered on coils and only slightly rub with 3 in the back seat and a bunch of junk in the trunk

So the lower ET number means the wheels will have more of a dished look, correct?
I'd like to go with as an aggressive look as possible.
As I stated in the first post, she's a ZHP, so she already lower than a sport package. I am not planning lowering it anymore. I do carry my three little girls from time to time.
So at this point I'm leaning pretty hard toward the 19's, 8.5's up front and 9.5
In the back.
I have 235's up front in the stick rims, shouldn't I stay with that?
Come you're running 225's up front now, do they look like they're stretched out?

Lower offset doesn't always equate to a deeper concave face. With our wheels, the face is the same between 9.5 ET22, ET33, and ET45. The only difference is the outer position of the wheel.

The lower the number, the closer to the center line the wheel is, and when it's negative, the back pad is further towards the inner rim than the center line.

Like I mentioned before, the sizing I recommend is tried and true. If you want something more aggressive you'll probably need to modify your car.

I love my 19's... but if you want better performance stick with 18's. Wanna pick up a nice set of Arc-8's soon.

I think that 18's are the perfect balance between performance and esthetics. An 19" wheel looks too big on an E46 in my opinion.

Aesthetics can be argued either way. Most would agree that in regards to performance, ride quality, and price that 18" is the way to go.

You shouldn't have any additional problems running 19s over 18s as long as you get the right tire sizing.
