Brake upgrade for my 325xi

So I bought a set of 17inch wheels and I have a huge void that needs filled in my wheel. I believe 330xi brakes are bigger so question is what is necessary to change my car over to the 330 brakes.

My car is a 2004 325xi. Also I was just planning on doing the front but is there a difference for the rear?

Do only front. You cannot retro the rear 330 brakes on a 325 without changing a lot of parts (half shafts etc), or you risk losing your parking brake.

My ebrake don't work anyway. So would changing calipers pads and rotors do the rear? It appears the front is a simple CPR swap?

That is 100% incorrect. 330 rear brakes fit a 325xi no problem.

OP- you need rotors, pads, and calipers with brackets. That's it.

simsima325 01-28-2013 07:33 PM

Is that due to different rear trailing arms on Xi cars?

Read my thread and you will see why this is NOT a direct swap on non Xi cars.

simsima325 01-28-2013 07:33 PM

and if OPs ebrake doesn't work, have you tried tightening the cable!?!?!

mixedgas401 01-28-2013 07:44 PM

Never mind. It helps if I read it all. I'm going to call off the rear upgrade for now.

I wouldn't mind doing the whole conversion. I have no problem cutting the shields to make the rotors fit and the ebrake isn't much of a concern since my car is an automatic

Yes. All 330's have xi trailing arms. I explained this in a thread a few weeks ago.

You are in the xi forum. Everything is under control. Thanks for checking in. Bye.

Wait .......!!!!! I'm confused. Is this a direct swap or not? I understand the front is but what about the rear?

Untrue.

Yes, the 325xi has the same trailing arm as the 330xi and the 330i. If you look for rear brake rotors, you will find that there is a rotor for the 325i, 330i/xi (interchangeable rotors), and 325xi. Rear rotors are NOT interchangeable between the 325i and 325xi. The difference between the 325i and 330i rotors are in the hats and overall diameter. The difference between the 325xi and the 330xi is just in the overall diameter, the hats are the same and therefore the ebrake will work just fine.

The 325xi, 330i, and 330xi all use the same rear suspension.

You will need to swap calipers, carriers, pads, and rotors on both front and back. No need to mess with trailing arms or any of that sort of thing.

Good luck.

PS: Might I ask what you're looking to get out of this brake "upgrade" other than some extra unsprung weight?

mixedgas401 01-29-2013 11:06 AM

I need a front caliper and all around brake job so I want to just do everything new since I financed this car and am stuck with it for three to five years. It is mainly for looks, so it fills in my wheels better. I have 17s and the 325 brakes look tiny in my wheels

No need to be a dick. Congrats on your expansive knowledge of such a fine automobile as the Xi E46.

OP GL with the upgrade, sounds like it might be easy to do the full 330 brake upgrade. I enjoyed my front 330 setup while I owned the car. More consistent braking and it filled out the wheels nicely. Should have been standard from the start on 325.

mixedgas401 01-29-2013 11:39 AM

Thanks. I'm def excited now that is so easy and I'll be under 200 for all four calipers.

So you're doing this only for looks then? Please realize that the larger brakes will have more unsprung weight and will therefore negatively impact your handling and performance.

mixedgas401 01-29-2013 07:17 PM

Yeah I understand that but as time goes on I plan to do more upgrades. Within two years I hope to be knowledgeable enough with the software end of these cars to do some sort of forced induction. So not everything is only for looks. I'm going to weigh the calipers and rotors from the 325 and 330 as well. I will post up the differences.

Please do this now that this thread has got my curiosity.

mixedgas401 01-29-2013 07:26 PM

Well I can't do it right now. I will do it as soon as I have everything together.....which will take a few weeks. Also I will be sure to drain all fluid from the old calipers to make this as accurate as possible

Lol I didn't expect you to do it right now. Just when you get to it.

mixedgas401 01-29-2013 07:31 PM

Also I would like to add that I converted an e36 to m3 brakes which I believe are similar part wise and I would guess that it was approximately 5-10 pounds in weight difference. We didn't actually weigh everything but it was for a race car and my boss and I guessed about what was being added. It was only small amounts in the rotors
