Any way of telling if my car ever had a tranny swap?
After reading up on the hill descent control button, and learning that my dashboard warning light (gear symbol with a "!" in the middle) doesn't exist on manuals, I'm starting to think that my car had a transmission swap that I am unaware of.

I'm the 5th owner, and she's 10 years old so it really wouldn't surprise me.

Mines 10 years as well and when I bought it 6months ago I drove ift for a week and had the same issue. The dealer that I got it from sent it to a local bmw mech and it was the torque converter. I have a 2004 325xi.

Hope this helps.

get your vin checked at a dealership or elsewhere.

I think you are right about the transmission swap.

You can check http://www.rubmw.ru/ and bmwvin.com/ to see how your car came from the factory. As stated above a dealer will do it for free, too.

Wait Are you talking about the i symbol inside a triangle surrounded by a circle? If so I got one of those and a dsc button on my manual. It works great

Do you mean auto to manual swap?

The best and easiest way to tell is to look for the shifter location indicator to the right of your odometer. If you have a PRND indicator that's dark and a stick shift...then yes the swap was done. If there's just a plastic cover piece in that section, then either the manual came that way from the factory or someone swapped the cluster as well.

FWIW, my manual also has hill descent control (I still have no idea why) and the little gear with exclamation point should be on every cluster, just disabled on manuals.
