Louder than normal engine upon starting

I've noticed when starting my 2003 M3's engine is slightly louder than normal when starting it up, and the rpm's seem to start higher than I remember. It's actually in the shop right now for a non related issue, but is this something I should be concerned with? Or am I just imagining things? (Always scared of VANOS issues)

It's the cold.

Cold..... Burrrrrrrrrr

Agreed. I think in the colder weather, the ECM richens the mixture a bit more and holds the RPMs up a touch higher too. I've always notice my exhaust has a slightly deeper, "richer" and raspier quality after first started when cold -- seems a bit punchier too until it, presumably, reverts back to a slightly leaner, more economical and cleaner mixture. At least that's my theory.

Dude, all engines are loud when they're cold. It's normal.
