M56 transmission compatibility?

Hi guys, I have a question for you transmission gurus...

I blew out the front pump in my 2004 325i SULEV. We are looking for the cheapest route just to get it going again so it can be sold.

RealOEM shows two different part numbers for the 5HP-19 for an M54 e46 and the M56 e46. Do I have to use the transmission specifically for the M56 or will a regular 5HP-19 bolt up and operate correctly? The M56 part number is obviously harder to come by. Also, do you guys have a good reference for used transmissions in the So Cali region? Thanks for your time

Steve

I think any ZF transmission should work. Worst case you might have to reflash the tranny computer with m54 software.

From what I've read, the M56 came with the same ZF transmission as the M54. The only difference is that they didn't get the GM transmission for whatever reason.

You might also want to check my SULEV thread (linked in my signature). Some parts of the transmission are covered under the 15/150k warranty.
