Auto top up w/ rain sensor?

So im being told its possible to have the top fold up when the auto rain sensing wipers detect water on the car, if so equipt and can be used to make the top go up, all when the car is sitting there parks and locked.

IS there any truth to it, have you guys heard of it, is there some module that has to be bought, or is it all just coding?

Interesting. I bet some wiz kid could do that. On the other hand, I've owned my car for 10 years and never been stupid enough to leave my top down when there was even a remote chance it would rain or I was going to be away from it for more than a short while or visual access to the weather outside. I can't even imagine how many thousand times my top's been up and down. Still works perfectly

Yeah. I'm the same way. But imagine how cool it would be. Mmm mmm :)

I don't like to be negative, but I doubt that this would be a simple conversion. Forgive me for putting a damper on your dreams, and hope I'm wrong.

Not knowing the particulars on BMW's top control module and rain sensor, I will assume that they are similar to most other convertibles out there. After all, the control module and the rain sensor are made by the same OEMs who supply other car manufacturers, and safety guidelines are pretty much universal for convertible tops.

Safety: BMW would not be able to sell a vehicle that closes the top without a safety feature that allows you to instantly stop the top operation or reverse it, in case someone or something got caught in the top during operation. That's why the annoying need to hold on to the soft top button.

Some aftermarket add-ons exist for most modern convertibles that allow you to close the top via key fob or by briefly moving the soft top button. Obviously, those have to be installed at your own risk.

Once you have such an aftermarket module, you could get the rain sensor to simulate the brief closing signal from the top switch via a solid state switch, for example. You would still have to go through another couple of steps: have the rain sensor active without the ignition on, and have it switch its duty from wipers to top operation when the ignition is off, so that both will never accidentally be activated at the same time.

Maybe there's a simpler way. I doubt that the E46 is prepared for this already and that it can all be accomplished by some simple recoding, but I hope I'm wrong... ;)

Auto top up w/ rain sensor?

There was a Cadillac in the 50's which had this feature and it was a big selling point. I'm sure it's possible because I have seen people convenience close their tops.

Imagine your liability if some guy is excitedly watching your top go up and gets his wiener cut off. Ouch!

I don't think the convertible top is strong enough to cut through an excited wiener.

He'd deserving it for having his tool on my car

Auto top up w/ rain sensor?

I have seen the option to 'close sunroof/moonroof at rain sensor activation' in the General Module coding when using NCSExpert.

I haven't had a chance to code a E46 with a sunroof/moonroof but I would think if the system can close the sunroof then maybe it can close the convertible top.

Back to NCS Expert to see if I can figure something out.

Any idea if the moonroof closing is possible with pa soft?

This is a great idea.

I only got hit by rain once and not that badly (fast runner), but would be a great feature to have, especially if it's already in the code.

Opening soft top via key fob-

My 2000 323Ci had this feature- i could lower it standing about 50ft from car. I often wondered if it could be coded to raise the top- without or without rain. I live in DFW area and am an avid top-down convertible owner- Never a problem with windows or top- I am certain I averaged once a day if not twice, during hot weather I would raise/lower 2,3. 4 times; bought it in '05 sold in 2010..... put 135k on her; biggest problem was coolant system... and driver seat belt re-tractor; never saw any evidence of hydraulic fluid leakage. I do have one question- Why in the world would a car that sells for over 50k new have soft rubber-like coating on the most used part of the interior- the console, not to mention around the cup holders ! Gads what are they thinking. Its the 1st thing to deteriorate in the interior. Is there a way to repair or replace that coating?
Your info would be appreciated.

Auto top up w/ rain sensor?

You can code the convertible soft top to raise via the remote by coding the 'Comfort Close' feature using NCS Expert.

The default settings from BMW was to only allow the 'Comfort Opening' feature. My guess would be due to safety in having something get caught by the top closing on someone or something.

Either way the soft top can be coded to be close via the remote control.

Having the soft top close 'automatically' when the rain sensor senses rain would be great!!!

I asked this question a year ago. Even called BMWNA to ask them about it.

If its doable, then I'd like to know. It got added to the backlist of things to do. Here's the link, hope it helps if someone wants to try.
