That is strange. Brown wire usually means ground on a BMW. I can't explain why it works properly with the wires not connected.

Blue is a good color for e46 vert. Dealers always leave some negotiating room in their price. If you've found the one you like, have it inspected, be willing to pay a little more than you'd like....

Face down makes it a pain to check air pressure in spare, but, that seems to be the way it supposed to go. It does leave more room for extra stuff that way.
