I'm inclined to think that car may have had paint work. I've never seen factory BMW paint do that if it's regularly washed and waxed. My E46 is also a red 330ci (Japan rot). I keep the car outside...

Adjust the parking brake. It takes 20 minutes or so.

IMO, that's no better than the M3. The 335i is just as powerful, just as easy to get into trouble with, and doesn't handle quite as well. It's more complex to work on as well.
