To me the gap looks larger than it should. There is usually a seam that's about 1/8''. Could be caused by an accident or it just needs to be pushed back in. Either way, you should have it inspected...

I would check the springs. Sometimes the rears will break. As for shocks, typically shocks do not impact ride height . Their job is to dampen the movement from the springs.
