Stone dead, no warning, simply wouldn't start.

The hard part about using mileage is that the pump's life is
probably measured in hours...

Hooking up to the DME (BMW Scanner for me, but any real- time scanner will work) might help- the live display will tell you what the DME THINKS is happening,
and that'll give you more to diagnose...

And your cap might be stuck- that happened on the E36, and it blew parts...
