Sometimes a visual inspection of the rear backing plates will reveal that rust has weakened the hardware for the parking brake causing it to become detached, hence unserviceable.

Do you know the history of the car? If it was used often, if it is used often for short trips under 8 km, then replace ASAP especially if the oil was only changed according to BMW on board computer....

Take a wheel off and look for a color code on the spring. It will be 1, 2 or 3 "splashes" of orange, grey/silver, green, blue seem to be most popular but could be another color.

Go on EBay and search BMW Bosch voltage regulator (I see 2 there) and you'll see what they look like. Very easy to remove. The important thing here is you can see the brushes stick out about 1/2...

I've used this kit too. I removed my covers and did the work over the laundry tub so I always had lots of water. Follow their directions exactly. My result was fabulous.
