The M52TU just has one more unique symptom due to the failed seals.
Yes, it's best to replace the seals and repair the variable valve timing system.

This sounds like the vanos rattle, but its manifesting in an unusual way.
It has to do with achieving the resonance in movements to cause the rattle.

The T30 bolt mounts a bearing center washer to the splined shaft. This doesn't affect the bearing parts axial fit, which if too tight would cause the piston to spin.

This is not a normal symptom.

It might be the AC tensioner if you haven't replaced it.

You can go back in there and install the rattle kit and make sure everything is correct.

The 330 is susceptible to having a vanos rattle. This can happen at idle or ~2k RPM. Beisan has a double rattle kit for this.
A single knock at 1200 RPM doesn't sound like a vanos rattle.
