I'm trying to use the parts I already have and avoid spending any money on new parts since the bilstein shocks I have are still good, provided the ride quality will be softer again.

When you take the cap off there is a plastic float that should come to the surface. As bad as this sounds...on the plastic shaft there should be two balls indicating the min and max levels.
