I wired mine in downstream from the relay. I have had no trouble with my dimmer and it looks exactly the same as your picture. I suppose at $3.99 the quality control is probably non existent.

Since you mentioned axles, make sure you don't have a pinhole in your cv boots. Check inside of wheels and fenders for any sign of grease. Leaking grease can get everywhere and will definately smell...
