My business CD player needed a code when I bought the car, pulled the radio out and it was hand written on a sticker attached to the top. Punched it in and bingo. Just my .02

FYI, I just rear ended someone last month with my 130k 2001 325i. Damaged the hood, headlights (non-zenon), core support, and bumper. Fenders were untouched... did end up replacing the coolant...

VCG is a pretty straight forward DIY. Carefull not to over torque the bolts (whisper I did not use a torque wrench when I tightened mine)
Have yet to rebuild my vanos so I can not advise on this...
