You just paid for your scanner 10 times over by fixing this problem yourself. The scanner will pay for itself again the first time you use it. Can't lose money on good tools.

Check your radiator hoses at the thermostat and the thermostat housing. The slightest leak from this area will drip water onto your belts and they will squeal until dried out.

I had a similar problem then changed the USB cable (had a spare printer cable around) and it worked OK. I'm guessing I might have pulled too hard on the cable at some point.

I have PIAA silicone blades on my 325iT and Z3 - not cheap in the short term but they seem to last forever and clear the windscreen like no other blade in my experience.
