I have since found out the E46 / E83 does not use CAN. The Parrot works without it but the steering wheel interface (called a MultiCAN) requires CAN and or K-Bus.

But there must be wiring for it somewhere further back - where does it originate?

The wet engine bay from all big coolant leaks made it too moist in there, a few days standing in heat and some WD40 made it all good again.
