M54b30 is pretty close to a straight swap, assuming it comes with the intake.

M52tub25 would work if you retained the m54 manifold. While it's not identical, it's close enough to work fine.

A torque converter will have more loss than a clutch, I agree. But the transmission itself could be more efficient due to a variety of reasons. The net result can tip in the automatic's favor.

It will fit, but I doubt you'll gain anything. I don't think the 2.2 liter moves enough air to see the benefit of the 330 manifold. The 325 manifold isn't even that bad to begin with.
