Ambient temp sensor. Had the EXACT same symptoms. Pulled one from a 5 series at the junkyard for a quickfix, worked perfectly ever since.

I have a 2000 323...I used to see the same error a lot. Use the round connector under the hood, it brings up everything you need. I use the round connector for all coding/diagnostic stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought build dates used the week/year format, so 07/98 would mean the 7th week of 1998. The reason I say this is because my car shows 44/99 as the build date IIRC...
