There is no visible failure, my only guess on it is after years and miles of wear and tear the springs wear out, I also noticed that BMW discontinued the original part number of the piston/spring...

This^ my car had bad idle problems for close to 3 years before it threw a code, after replacing the VANOS seals the idle was better but still threw P1520. Turned out the springs on the solenoid...

Rrplaced the VANOS seals from www.beisansystems.com and installed new valve cover gasket. This job is a lot easier than the oil filter housing gasket and CCV which I have also done. Must thank Rajaie...
