Not sure of the details but one thing they changed was that stupid pinch bolt. pre-2002 or so they installed grade 8.8 bolts (weaker) and the newer bolts are 10.9.

I would recommend using Kroil...

From my experience the seals do not easily pop in and out, i used a seal puller and had to really pry it out. Use care not to marr the bearing pedestal. Definitely coat the whole seal in fresh oil....

not sure if the "BMW" branded axles are new or remanned, but GKN is the supplier that makes them. If you buy a new GKN axle thats what you would get from the factory...they are like $300-400 though.
