a dead or shrted cell is a very comon battery failure mode. Just rule out the battery before you try to find a parasitic drain.

If the belt was gone, the battery is probably weak/discharged since tehre was no alternator charging.

Have you disconnected the battery overnight to see if it runs down overnight without beoing connected? That is the simplest check to confirm a parasitic drain.

From experience, do NOT buy the autozone alternator. Mine lasted 4 miles. Numerous other people have had short time failures and weird operating conditions like fluctuatoing volatge and idle speed....

From my read of your post, you were not seeing the red light indicating a lack of charge.

No big surprise if a 12 year old battery is bad.
