VERY Rough cold idle

Over the weekend I replaced the oil filter housing gasket, vanos tube,both belts, fan clutch, spark plugs and valve cover gasket - whew! Fired right up - no leaks, however after starting the car...

Silly question from a new member

In all the DIY procedures I have see on changing the oil filter housing gasket none of them document the need to drain the oil first? Is this a necessary step? A recent inspection at my dealer...
