The latching mechanism under the front cover is likely broken if you can freely move the elbow latch. Did you compress the latch and shine a flashlight in to see if the composite part is broken?

#2 is likely the broken latch, as it also controls a latch at that elbow that won't straighten out. Review the latches DIY again for info on the latch at the "first bend".

Your latches are likely broken if it didn't clamp to the windshield properly and the motor continues to run. Fix this before it's too late and the top is locked to the windshield.

The sensors are cheap, $20, if you buy the version without the connector and splice them...
