OP, the secondary air pump is not designed to run continuously. It only runs for a few seconds on start up, depending on how cold the engine is. It is an emissions device.

My M56 fuel pump went out a couple of months ago. Have a 2003 325i w/108000 miles. Chapman BMW in Chandler, AZ is replacing tank,etc. under emissions warranty here in AZ. Big relief.

There should only be the one salmon relay. Replacing it on mine fixed my problem. Make sure you get the right one. I had to take my bad one into the stealer so they could get the right one for me.
