Thanks guys - If I have to pull the HU to remove the OEM adapter I'll probably just use the radio interface on the MediaBridge instead of the trunk interface, for better audio quality.

Doubt it - I took mine in (2002 325i with 75k miles) recently for the inspection. No cracks, but a rear spring was broken. Tech said broken spring is not uncommon.
