Most fuel pumps and senders (many of which are made by VDO) use the gasoline they pump as a lubricant and coolant. Allowing these plastic pumps to run without fuel can cause the pump shafts to melt...

The price is a lot less then 10k. You don't need all the parts on the list, you can choose either CF or Fiberglass. CF is like $6k, Fiberglass is around $4700. Still a boatload of money though...
