The BMW scanner might reveal that, most fanatics have the BMW 1.4.

It's a good idea to unplug the connector from the DME and check for corrosion....

The timing chain assembly is very reliable on these engines.

He needs to just pour some oil in each cylinder to restore compression.

The Peake tool would probably indicate bad DME, but they rarely fail.

Crank sensor failure on these cars isn't common, but does happen from time to time.
No rpm reading while cranking points to bad CPS.
Have you read codes? Check for pending codes, it might come up....

Low voltage can also cause weird electrical symptoms, what you described.

I just tapped it in using the old outer race.
