On the front for a NON-XI, it'll be fine for a couple miles. If the flat was on the rear I'd say to put a front on the rear and the "spare" on the front. If XI then I wouldn't recommend it.

I used the 1 1/4 wrench and hammer method. I hit it over a dozen times and it would let loose. Finally I got pissed and hit it as hard as I could, it came loose easily then.
