The only way for transmission fluid to get in the coolant is through the trans cooler.

Had that happen once on a Volvo.

It does sound like a rod bearing, but it's not that if it comes and goes randomly.
Remove both belts, then spin and wiggle each pulley by hand, the bad one will be rough and/or there is free play.
