I've had a 5-speed 2000 323iT for almost 10 years. Love it despite all of the notorious problems, including a second upcoming replacement of the ball joints, control arms, and bushings at 93K miles....

Yeah, it's the regulator. I've recently replaced the fourth, they all went bad over the last 5 years. You may be able to temporarily lift the window and sort of tape it (with clear 3M movers tape)...
