If it just look then why not just go for a trim. Many 330d owners cut off the old twin downturned pipes and welded on 330i trims. Same could be done with a 320d albeit a single pipe.

Try unplugging the MAF (mas air flow sensor) - there are loads of threads on the site bmwland mentioned above. Drive it and if the performance is back on track it means yours was faulty. They cost...
