ok cool. called bmw dealership today and the guy in parts said they use gm dextron vi. wanted to sell me a liter for 19. another 150 for the filter.

I suppose it is just standard for the dealership to say it needs a new trans at the first sign of trouble, from what I hear they don't do any service on the internals....
