If this was closer I would have been all over it as I probably need a transmission pretty soon. Not sure what would be involved inswapping engine and tranny in my 323.

I would recommend using your spare key and see if you have the same issue, your key might be the issue as it can't "communicate" with the car.

How old is the battery? Batteries usually last like 4-5 years on average.
Whats the voltage at the terminals? Should be above 12 V not running the car, and above 13V running.
Is your Check battery...
