I had that same issue, took a lot of smacking with a 5lb sledge. When you do get the old axle out, put a liberal amount of antiseize on the splines of the new axle. I just replaced an axle again...

It could be the gasket for the oil filter cartridge holder. It is not as obvious as the VCG as it is tucked down against the engine. I had to replace mine at about 100k miles. Good luck!
