that plug may go into the back of the alternator. if you do your vcg you might want to consider your vanos seals as well. if you can knock out the ofhg the vanos seals shouldnt be a problem.

at 96k i wouldnt necessarily say you need to refresh everything like everyone is saying. im at 178k and have replaced some proactively and some as they broke. my car has never left me stranded....

Check your upper and lower intake boots for tears. Lower intake boot probably has a hole in it where the small elbow splits off.

Why would you need to get the hydraulic? Just replace the pulley itself and not the tensioner if you want to save money. And replace the other pulleys while you're at it. The idler and tensioner go...
