It isn't a matter of turning the amplifier on, it has to do with frequency matching between the radio and the amp. It is like attaching a cellular antenna to an FM receiver - it won't work properly....

I have that same PS leak. Replaced the clamps with worm drive ones and it helped, but it needed to be tightened again a few months later - just don't overtighten as the fitting on the PS pump is all...
