Unless the main real seal leaks, I don't see any reason to mess with it. Leaky rear main seals are very common on older American cars, but I've never had a BMW that leaks.

I haven't seen any E90 engine swaps yet. You'd have to have an E90 donor car, not an E46. Might as well buy one used with the motor you want already in it, or just supercharge what you have.
