So I removed the pan and took a few picture of the fill plug from inside the transmission.

Nevermind. I just looked up torx sizes and how they map to millimiters (look at wikipedia).
The T40 is 6.65mm.
The T50 is 8.83mm.

I'm driving a 2001 330i and had a similar problem as chnzgoofball. I somehow managed to strip the fill plug. Fill plug is supposed to be Torx T-45. The drain plug is T-40.

The non-remote key worked fine most of the time... there have been occassions when I couldn't...
