With the Alpina software you can run single vanos with MS43, and get all the benefits minus the exhaust vanos control. You would use the MS43 harness and sensors

Like a DIY? No, I haven't made one. Some stuff works out of the box (like oil temp), some stuff requires some recoding with NCS / PASoft, and then the warmup LEDs require DME software modification....

Yeah, it's actually not hard at all to clone an MS45. I got one out of a 2006 X3 for $20, just copied my ZHP's internal flash, external flash, and eeprom to the DME, and it just works.

How often are you removing the belts? Yeah it's not the greatest design, but for how often you need to touch the tensioner, it's really not a big deal. Just keep one hand on the head of your wrench

You're good to go. E46s don't have heated catalysts, EGR, or AC refrigerant monitors. On a real OBD computer they'll show up as "Not Applicable"
