No the center support bushing sits mid way...

No the center support bushing sits mid way through the drive shaft to support it while the centering sleeve centers the drive shaft at the tranny.

Also not sure if it is the same on e46's but on...

BMW's aren't outrageously expensive unless you are a lazy idiot. Most things can be done by yourself if you read and aren't afraid to try doing them yourself. What you save in parts cost...
