I used that loop plus a jack+wood under oil pan to get the lift I needed to insert the new mounts.

Could it be the universal joint making the noise? I don't want to replace the hub only to find the joint is bad. I wouldn't think it would make that gear...

Yup. I think the tire was bottoming out on the rim before the suspension could react. By increasing the pressure (spring rate) of the tire, it allows both systems to do some work.

Are you sure? It only makes that sound when one wheel is stopped, so the planetary gear is spinning like crazy. I was told that is a normal noise if one wheel is stopped.

Have a listen to the sounds from the wheels and diff while I had the rear end in the air. Ignore the scraping sound at the wheel, that's just the brake pad dragging. It sounds like a lot of noise...
