Its not usually common either to replace the slave cyl on a clutch job.
Normally the hydraulic system does not get opened...

sounds strange but smelling the smoke will tell you if its coolant or oil. Its said that oil smoke is sort of bluish vs coolant being much whiter.
Ive seen head gaskets go bad or the heads warp...

I have been comparing my mpg avg in the instrument cluster to my miles traveled and fuel gallons i took on filling up and the cluster is like 2-3 mpg
higher.
