Another pic with the 2 piece plastic rain sensor housing.
No brown spots or leaks. It's a newer model with the slim gray clown nose instead of the large red one.
Sold to EDB. Will ship tomorrow...

Batteries being used means they are getting recharged, which is good. Batteries that sits on the shelf just discharge.
In general, <1 year old and >12.4V is OK.

Did you try swapping the 2 sensors and see if the problem follows the sensor?

Remove plastic engine cover and check if the sensor wires are good.

Maybe use this type of o2 sensor socket...

Had the same hex 44 code intermittently. Replaced with genuine BMW part a few weeks ago. Too early to tell if it solves my problem.
Very easy to replace; don't think you need to go to a shop.
