To totally get it all out though you'll need to do the siphoning exercise you mentioned about five or six...

So has it been confirmed that draining the coolant is a fairly likely fix? This started after I replaced a thermostat and I feel like I filled it properly. I'll try just bleeding it this weekend...

Is the car an auto? If so, does this only happen in drive? If both of these are true, it's could be the transmission mount just got old and needs to be replaced.
