I got 3 alternators from Advance, non of them lasted much over a year, get one from FCP Euro, at least they stand behind their parts forever no questions asked.

If it's not a Genuine BMW part it most likely won't work, unless the manufacturer takes his logo off. My 2003 325xi might be needing one and the price for the factory sensor is $113 from FCP Euro....

The caliper should come out without removing the mounting bracket, but it might help to take out the 16mm bolts that attach it. Usually just taking out the guide pins is enough.

Nothing you did should have affected the valve cover gasket which is the usual cause for smoke on that side. I'd just keep running it till any residue burns off and keep a close eye on your fluid...

Any exhaust leaks or vacuum leaks. A smoke test might help find vacuum leaks better than using starting fluid. Has the fuel filter been changed recently?
