He would have over revved his engine if he was over 40mph easily - I went from 6th to 2nd at 80mph when I first got my car and bent loads of valves !

Could be vacuum air leak - check the intake boot especially the lower one, probably has a hole in it. Easy to check and very common.

check lower and upper intake boots for cracks (especially lower) and did you correctly torque down to spec the valve cover? suggest you read up on vacuum leaks and start chasing the failing rubber on...
