My Touring is a 2000 and has not a speck of rust anywhere. No tailgate/hatch problems either. No problem with the rear wiper or hatch latch. I suppose some people can actually break an anvil.

While you were doing your CVV, did you remove the air spreader plate? Did you replace the O-rings on the spreader plate before you put it back in? Very small vacuum leaks can cause big problems.
