You want the soldering iron to touch the wires so they will heat up and accept the solder - this is important in making a good connection. There is no need to disconnect the battery when you solder....

That seems a bit high for drivetrain loss. I did say tht the manual would help on the launch part but, once you are going, it's not a huge difference on the shifting.
