The current FSR is an "upgrade" from the original part. It was first used on E39s and X5s, and has longer porcupine quills/heat sinks.
Those Bentley instructions sound like they're attacking it from under the hood and removing the blower fan to get at the FSR. It's much easier to get to it from the front passenger's footwell after removing the glove box.
